Holiday Appeal

Treasured Patrons,
Approaching the end of this year, we’re struck by how much we’ve faced and just how much we’ve been given.   A fire took away our fishing collection, all our books, and the use of our dear small Main Street library.

But, oh, what we’ve been given!  After the fire, the town immediately gave us use of the wonderful space at Ave Maria Drive.  You, our patrons, unhesitatingly made the adjustment and helped us make this new space “home.”  You visited, you offered words of encouragement, and your offers of help gave us spirit.  You gave us used books, donations of shelves, copy and fax machines, and helped us to clean and paint.   You spent hours sorting donated books.  You helped us throw out all our smoke-damaged collection in a dumpster in town.  You came to our book and bake sales and helped us put on a beautiful musical fundraiser.  Did we mention:  you baked, baked and baked some more.  You ran, walked and wobbled in the Turkey Trot where close to 3,000 dollars was raised.    You put in coins, small bills and large checks into the big pretzel jar at our front desk.  By a 2 to 1 margin, you voted for our increased budget in November, telling us you believed in what we were doing.  In short, we’ve been given, over and over, the gift of love from our town.

Thank you.

Here’s the good news.  We have gathered enough money to allow us to get back to the Main Street Library by sometime late next year.  This is an amazing feat that came about through funds raised in and by the community, being awarded a large state construction grant, the persistence of the board to make sure a fair value will be given to us from insurance, and … because of the support of the voters, the supervisor and town board, the Rotary, Mid-Hudson Library System, and most of all, our patrons.

If, in this season of giving, you wish to include the library in your generosity, there is still much to be done.  What your gift can do:

*  5 dollars pays for the art materials at Miss Ginger’s weekly Saturday story hour for children

*  12 dollars pays for a book to be purchased for our new lending Kindles, soon to be available to patrons

*  15 dollars pays for a year’s subscription to a magazine

* 25 dollars pays for a hard cover best seller

* 20 to 30 dollars pays for us to staff our free adult programming such as our recent workshop on Medicare

* 50 dollars will help us pay for shelving in our expanded fiction room

Even if a gift is not possible at this time, far more importantly, we want to thank you for all that you have done in this year.   Simply offering us a smile and your patronage … this is priceless.

Phoenicia Library Rebuild Update

The Phoenicia Library is moving closer toward rebuilding 48 Main St. Though you may not see that progress yet, you will. We hope to be back in the building by next year at this time. The library’s building committee has been consulting with the architects of North Engineers, Kingston, exploring the best possible scenarios for rebuilding, including; refining the “flow” and use of the space, a first floor lavatory and other ADA considerations, improvements in the areas of energy efficiency, and creating more space that is usable by the community for meetings, programs and so forth. In addition to the incredibly generous donations and fundraising efforts sponsored by the community, the library recently applied for and was awarded a Construction Grant from New York State, and will rely on our insurance claim as we endeavor to fund the rebuild project.

On Thursday November 17th at 7 PM, we will hold a community meeting at Shandaken Town Hall to present our progress and ask for your input. We are so thankful for all of the incredible support!

We remain so grateful to all of you for your continued support, as we have a long road ahead of us. But, judging by the list of fundraisers below, we may even have some fun in the process.
