The Phoenicia Library Association seeks a new leader for its library.
The library serves the Town of Shandaken, NY, with a population of approximately 5,000. The library is located in the quaint hamlet of Phoenicia, near Woodstock, NY, and is well-loved by its community. The library director will be responsible for the planning, direction, coordination and provision of services by the Phoenicia Library and assisting the Library Board as it proceeds with plans to build a new library facility that is better able to serve the needs of the community.
Salary: $30,000 - 35,000 annually (based on qualifications)
We estimate the hours will average 30 weekly, though longer hours may be necessary at times

Major duties would include, without limitation:
- Day-to-day administration of the Library.
- Planning, organizing and implementing library programs and activities.
- Planning and recommending library policies and procedures.
- Carrying out Library’s Plan of service and Board policies.
- Supervising, directing and planning activities of paid and volunteer personnel.
- Collection development.
- Preparing budgets and annual, monthly and special reports for the Library Board.
- Planning and recommending development and improvement of library services.
- Monitoring changes in the community, in technology and in library practices and adjusting policies, procedures and plans accordingly.
- Serving as the official representative of the library in all library-related matters.
- Making presentations to civic and educational groups.
- Conducting a public relations program to increase public awareness of library programs and services.
- Keeping informed on advances and changes in the library field through membership in professional organizations and attendance at conferences and workshops.
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with local school officials, clubs, community groups, professional colleagues and the public.
Qualifications:
- Independent judgment and initiative in carrying out the daily operations of the library efficiently and effectively.
- Knowledge of the practices and methods of library science and public library administration, including reference, technical services, circulation, public relations, collection development, cataloging, computers and related technology, and adult and youth services.
- Knowledge of reader interests and needs and of the range of library materials and formats available to meet those needs.
- Ability to write and speak effectively.
- Ability to use computers and related technology for all library-related purposes.
- At least two years work experience in a public library, and at least two years experience in a supervisory capacity, which may be other than in a library. A bachelor’s degree is essential; a Master's in Library Science from an ALA-accredited school is preferred.
